It started as a joke...
Anyone who knows me, knows I don’t take myself too seriously and that I like to joke around. Back in 2017 I was joking around on some of the Isopod Forums on Facebook and posted a pic that I had doctored of some frozen fish and introduced the world to a brand-new product called “Iso Grub”.
Little did I suspect that people would take it seriously, and I started receiving messages and emails from both retail and wholesale customers wanting to buy it. Only problem was it was a complete joke!! That being said, requests continued rolling in.
A friend, Mike Rizzo owner of Glass Box Tropicals pushed me to turn it into a real product. I wasn’t convinced at first but eventually I took his advice and Iso Grub was born!!! The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, and we are currently up to 8 products in our Isopod Nutrition lineup with new ones being developed. Stay tuned.

Why Minnows?
The most common question I get asked is – “Why minnows?”
Besides the fact that they are a great protein source for Isopods and that the bones serve as a calcium source let me share a story:
I have kept Isopods for decades, since I was a young kid. In fact, my grandfather used to build me cages to keep them and insects in as well. The first time I realized Isopods would eat fish was about 30 years ago when I was approximately 12 years old. At the time I had a small homemade pond in the back yard.
The first year I had the pond, raccoons devastated the fish population in the pond. The pond was way to shallow and the fish had no chance to escape. It was almost as if the raccoons were entertaining themselves with the fish, catching them, taking a bite and leaving the rest of the carcass on the side of the pond.
Anyway, the next morning when I stumbled upon the crime scene, I noticed that the local Isopods were going to town on the dead fish. I always kept that in mind and when I got heavy into Isopods, I would always feed any dead fish from my aquariums to them. The feed response was amazing!
That really was the beginning of the concept for Iso Grub. You could say it was decades in the making!
